Use of Photographs in the Media
Greenfylde Church of England First School
Policy on the Use of Photographs in the Media
This policy should be taken as part of the overall strategy of the school and operated within the context of our vision, aims and values as a Church of England School.
As a school we often celebrate our successes through the local media or on our website. This often means that we are requested to allow members of the press to take photographs of children/ groups of children to accompany the article.
We also display photographs of pupils around the school, often in areas open to public visitors.
Children and parents enjoy seeing these photographs. They also act to enhance the reputation of the school in the community. However, we also realise that there must be discretion over the use of such photographs and safeguards must be put in place for those parents who do not wish their child(ren) to be photographed.
As a school we have no objection to the use of photographs in the media, but acknowledge that there must be parental permission for such photographs to be taken. The need for permission also extends to the publication of pupil names in the local press and on our website.
As a strict rule we will not publish a pupil's name and photograph on our website in a way which identifies them clearly. Generally, photographs of individuals or small groups will not be put on the website. A child?s full name will never be used.
In order to ascertain parental views, we will ask parents to complete the following form at the start of each academic year. The form clearly states that such photography, and the associated use of pupil names, will be used by the school unless the parents specifically object by returning the form with a negative response. A master list will be kept in the school office.
In the case of divorce, parental permission must be sought from both parents.
Where a child is in care the permission must come from social services.
If a child's circumstances change during the year, e.g. parental separation, permission will be sought from those with parental responsibility.

Parental Permission Form
To celebrate school events we regularly invite the press to take photographs of the children for publication. Examples of this include drama productions, sports events, special events. We may also use pictures of groups of pupils on the school website. Children's photographs on the website are never individual.
To ensure that we comply with parents' wishes on these matters, please complete the form and return it to school so that we have a record of your views. If the form is not returned we will assume that you are happy for your child?s photograph to be used as described.
THIS FORM IS AVAILABLE FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE.
