Homework
Greenfylde C of E First School
Homework Policy
This policy should be taken as part of the overall strategy of the school and operated within the context of our vision, aims and values as a Church of England School.
Introduction
At Greenfylde, we encourage all children to work hard and to do their best. The rigorous demands of the National Curriculum, in particular the Literacy and Numeracy Strategies, place increasing pressure on children and we believe that it is important that children have the opportunity to participate in group activities and socialise out of school hours. It is pleasing that many Greenfylde pupils are already doing this.
However, we recognise that a reasonable amount of work undertaken at home can have significant benefits to children's progress.
Homework should
* enhance and support work undertaken in school.
* be pleasurable, encouraged and supported by parents.
* reinforce and practise skills learnt in school (particularly in literacy and numeracy).
* promote an effective partnership between the school, parents and other carers.
* encourage children to develop progressively the confidence and self discipline needed to study independently; thus preparing them for the demands of the next phase of their education.
* be for a specific amount of time (this depends on the age of the child).
Homework may involve work in several areas and government recommendations for homework and average time allocations state
Years 1 & 2 1 hour per week reading, spellings, other literacy work and number work
Years 3 & 4 12 hours per week literacy and numeracy as for Years 1 & 2 with occasional assignments in other subjects
READING
In Key Stage 1 no more than 10 minutes reading practice per evening would be expected. We would ask parents to encourage an enjoyment of books (pictures and text). In Key Stage 2 10 - 15 minutes reading per day would be expected. Many of our older children are fluent, independent readers and will enjoy a good book.
We would encourage reading together as a continuous and beneficial activity for parents and children of all ages which forms the core of our homework policy. We are in agreement with the Government's advice that this should continue even when other activities are set. There is an expectation that reading will take place daily whereas other homework activities will be set at regular intervals.
MATHS/NUMERACY
The emphasis in Key Stage 1 Mathematical practice will be on oral and mental activities - counting, number games, practising number facts and increasing children=s confidence and speed. At Key Stage 2 - children will be expected to spend 30 minutes per week developing this with increasing fluency and in learning multiplication facts, number bonds and tables. Guidance will be produced on how parents might contribute to this.
LEARNING SPELLINGS
In the early years of schooling children are encouraged to learn a number of Key Words by sight. In Years 2, 3 and 4 between 15 - 25 minutes per week should be spent on learning spellings. Parents will be notified through their child when spellings are issued and when they are to be tested.
TOPIC WORK
Occasionally, work based on topics studied in class will be given as homework. This will compliment the work being undertaken in school (e.g. Science, History, Geography).
